A floor plan can look perfectly rational on paper and still make people hesitate, backtrack, or gather in places the architect never expected. That gap between drawn geometry and lived behavior is exactly what space syntax research tries to expose. Understanding how space syntax analysis is used in architecture research means looking beyond colorful diagrams. […]

Walls, roofs, and foundations influence roughly 28% of building energy use in the United States, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Yet energy efficiency tells only part of the climate story. A highly efficient building can still overheat during a blackout, flood during an extreme storm, or carry a substantial carbon burden in its […]

A site can quietly make a promising architectural idea impossible before the first floor plan is finished. A floodplain can change the buildable footprint, one mature tree can redirect circulation, and a zoning setback can eliminate the massing concept that looked perfect in studio. That is why learning how to conduct a site analysis for […]

A beautiful building photograph can be one of the least useful pieces of an architectural case study. It shows the finished object, but rarely explains why a stair sits where it does, how daylight reaches deep rooms, what carries the roof, or whether occupants actually enjoy using the building. That is why learning how to […]

A building can be highly energy-efficient on opening day yet arrive with decades’ worth of climate impact already locked into its concrete, steel, glass, insulation, and finishes. That is why researchers increasingly look beyond utility bills and ask what emissions occurred before occupants ever switched on the lights. Learning how to measure embodied carbon in […]

A floor plan can show where a corridor sits, but it cannot reveal where people hesitate, which bench stays empty, or why everyone cuts across a lobby instead of following the intended route. Those mismatches between design intent and lived use are exactly what behavior mapping makes visible. For researchers learning how to conduct behavior […]

A city can reveal one of its most important design problems after nearly every detail has been removed from the map. Strip away street names, property labels, trees, traffic, building heights, and architectural styles. Fill every building footprint in black and leave everything else white. Suddenly, continuous street walls, oversized parking fields, broken blocks, hidden […]

A beautiful precedent board can still produce bad research. Ten projects may look carefully documented, yet if one is judged by its floor plan, another by sustainability claims, and a third by photographs, almost nothing is genuinely comparable. Learning how to compare multiple architecture case studies systematically means replacing that uneven collection of observations with […]

A room can register 72°F and still feel uncomfortably cold to one person and stuffy to another. That apparent contradiction is the first lesson in how to measure thermal comfort in building research: temperature alone is not thermal comfort. ASHRAE defines thermal comfort around human satisfaction with the thermal environment, meaning researchers must measure both […]

A building can look environmentally intelligent on a rendering and still perform poorly once people move in. Orientation, glazing, occupancy schedules, shading, insulation, HVAC controls, and even local weather can interact in ways that are difficult to predict by intuition alone. That is why learning how to use building performance simulation in architecture matters. Instead […]
